1: About the Dropdown Menu Element
The Dropdown Menu element allows participants to select one answer from a drop-down menu. This element must have multiple choices to present (i.e., the answer options in the drop-down menu), and may also contain rows and/or columns.

2: Adding a Dropdown Menu Element
To add a Dropdown Menu element, first click the "+ Element" button to add a new survey element. Then click "Single and Multi Select" under Question Types and select the "Dropdown Menu" element. Then click "Add".
In the staging area, enter the question text and instructions, add your desired response options, and configure the question's style settings.
2.1: Adding Choices
Click "+ New Choice" to add each new option in the drop-down menu, then enter the answer option in the text field.
Note: Do not number the answer options unless you want that numeric text to appear for the participant. The system will automatically provide labels with the prefix "ch" and/or numbers for the choices which you can edit later in "View Options."
2.2: Adding Rows
Click "Add Rows" to add a new row, then enter the answer option in the text field. If the question already contains rows, click "+ New Row" to add a new row.
Note: Do not number the answer options unless you want that numeric text to appear for the participant. The system will automatically provide labels with the prefix "r" and/or numbers for the rows which you can edit later in "View Options."
2.3: Adding Columns
Click "Add Columns" to add a new column, then enter the answer option in the text field. If the question already contains columns, click "+ New Column" to add a new column.
Note: Do not number the answer options unless you want that numeric text to appear for the participant. The system will automatically provide labels with the prefix "c" and/or numbers for the columns which you can edit later in "View Options."
2.4: Customizing Response Options
Click "Choice/Row/Column Actions" to perform the following actions for selected response options:
Insert Reusable Answer List (only available if you have previously saved an answer list)
3: Configuring Style Settings
To configure the style settings, click the "..." button at the top right of the element in the staging area and select Update Styling.

4: Configuring Question Settings
The options available for configuring question and response settings are displayed to the right of the staging area. Click any question or response option to set rules for it. Options vary based on the item selected.
4.1: Question Options
Select the question to set the following options:
- Label: The label assigned to the element. You may edit the default label for the select element here.
- Show If: Allows you to create new logic conditions or select an existing logic condition for the element. For more information, see Adding Logic to a Question or Response Option.
- Languages: Select what languages will the element be shown in if the survey has multiple languages. The default is "all languages."
- Mandatory: When checked this option will force participants to provide a response. The participant will be unable to continue the survey without completing the question.
- Randomize: Show answer options in random order. Check Rows, Columns, Groups or Groups Only, and/or Choices to randomize.
- Rating/Scale: Enables nets in the report. To learn how to set up your rating scale preferences in the report, see Editing Tables in Crosstabs.
- More Options: Use the drop-down menu to select less commonly used options. Once selected, you will be able to specify the setting for that option. For more information on each option, see More Options - Advanced Features.
4.2: Choice Options
Select a choice to set the following options for that specific option:
- Label: The label assigned to the choice. You may edit the default label for the choice here.
- Data Value: The value assigned to the choice in the data. You may edit the default value for the choice here if the option is available.
- Show If: Allows you to create new logic conditions or select an existing logic condition for the choice. For more information, see Adding Logic to a Question or Response Option.
- Languages: Select what languages will the choice be shown in if the survey has multiple languages. The default is "all languages."
- Do Not Randomize: This option is only available if the "Randomize" general option is selected. Checking this box will force the choice to remain stationary.
- Optional: This option is only available if the "Mandatory" general option is selected. When checked it will allow for the choice to become optional and non-mandatory.
- Hidden: The option will hide the choices from participants.
- More Options: Use the drop-down menu to select less commonly used options. Once selected, you will be able to specify the setting for that option. For more information on each option, see More Options - Advanced Features.
4.3: Row Options
Select a row to set the following options for that specific row:
- Label: The label assigned to the row. You may edit the default label for the row here.
- Data Value: The value assigned to the row in the data. You may edit the default value for the row here if the option is available.
- Show If: Allows you to create new logic conditions or select an existing logic condition for the row. For more information, see Adding Logic to a Question or Response Option.
- Languages: Select what languages will the row be shown in if the survey has multiple languages. The default is "all languages."
- Do Not Randomize: This option is only available if the "Randomize" general option is selected. Checking this box will force the row to remain stationary.
- Optional: This option is only available if the "Mandatory" general option is selected. When checked it will allow for the row to become optional and non-mandatory.
- Open End: Allows you to add an open end response box to the row by selecting "mandatory" or "optional" from the drop-down menu. "Mandatory" means the participant must enter feedback in the response box to continue if the row is selected, "optional" means that feedback is not required.
- Hidden: The option will hide the row from participants.
- No Answer: This option will replace the select form with an exclusive checkbox form. It is primarily used if there is a "Don't know" or "None of these" answer choice in the question.
- More options: Use the drop-down menu to select less commonly used options. Once selected, you will be able to specify the setting for that option. For more information on each option, see More Options - Advanced Features.
4.4: Column Options
Select a column to set the following options for that specific column:
- Label: The label assigned to the column. You may edit the default label for the column here.
- Data Value: The value assigned to the column in the data. You may edit the default value for the column here if the option is available.
