Tip: See Customizing the Rating Scale Element to learn how to customize the Rating Scale element in the XML Editor.
1:Rating Scale Overview
The Rating Scale element provides an interactive alternative to the standard grid base rating question. It utilizes a single select form and must contain multiple rows and columns. This element does not utilize Flash and is mobile compatible.
Note: This question type works on mobile devices, but please be aware that adding more than a few columns causes horizontal scrolling which may not be obvious on a mobile device. If that happens, you may see an increased number of answers in the first couple of columns as participants may not realize there are more columns that appear off-screen.
2: Adding a Rating Scale Element
Note: You can set the "Show if" filter to display only elements that are compatible or optimized for the devices allowed for your project. See Project Settings Summary to learn how to verify your project settings.
To add a Rating Scale element, first click the "+ Element" button to add a new survey element. Then click "Rate, Rank, and Sort" under Question Types and select the "Rating Scale" element. Then click "Add".
Enter the question and instruction text in the areas provided.
Rating Scale elements must contain multiple rows and columns. Do not number the answer options unless you want that numeric text to appear for survey participants. The system automatically provides labels / numbers for the answer options, which you can edit later in "Options".
Tip: The answer options in a Rating Scale element should be measurable attributes.
Example of measurable attributes:
- Completely agree
- Somewhat agree
- Neither agree nor disagree
- Somewhat disagree
- Completely disagree
Example of attributes that are not measurable:
- Every day
- 1 to 4 times a week
- Once or twice a month
- Less often
- Never
2.1: Configuring Row / Column Options
All answers appear in the question box with labels (e.g., r1, r2, r3, or c1, c2, c3). Labels with the "r" prefix indicate row elements. Click "+ New row" to add a row. Labels with the "c" prefix indicate column / button elements. Click "+ New column" to add a column / button. You may edit the answer options in the question boxes. Click "Answer Piping" under "Row Actions" or "Column Actions" to show rows or columns based on the answers of a previous question; to learn more, see Answer Piping.
You can preview the element at any time by clicking the "Preview" button located at the top right corner of the element. To find out more about previewing an element, see Previewing a Question.
In the general options for the question, be sure to check the "Rating/Scale" box. This will create additional nets for the element in the report. The net options for a 4-7 point rating scale include Top 2 and Bottom 2 nets while an 8-11 point rating scale also includes Top 3 and Bottom 3 nets.
