Tip: See Customizing the Star Rating Element to learn how to customize the Star Rating element in the XML Editor.
1: About the Star Rating Element
The Star Rating element utilizes a select form and must contain star values, as well as rows and / or columns. This element is mobile compatible and does not utilize Flash.
Note: Usability degrades on mobile devices as the number of columns in a question increases.
Tip: It is not a guarantee that participants will trigger (i.e., hover-over) and read each star value (tooltip) before answering the question. A legend should be shown as part of the question text (or instructions) if each star value represents an especially unique rating.
2: Adding a Star Rating Element
Note: You can set the "Show if" filter to display only elements that are compatible or optimized for the devices allowed for your project. See Project Settings Summary to learn how to verify your project settings.
To add a Star Rating element, first click the "+ Element" button to add a new survey element. Then click "Rate, Rank, and Sort" under Question Types and select the "Star Rating" element. Then click "Add".
Enter the question and instruction text in the areas provided.
2.1: Adding Star Tool Tips
Click "+ New Star Tool Tip" to add each new star tool tip, then enter the text for the response option in the text field.
2.2: Adding Rows
Click "+ New Row" to add each new row, then enter the text for the response option in the text field.
If required, you can add columns as well. Do not number any response options unless you want that numeric text to appear for survey participants. The system automatically provides labels / numbers for the response options, which you can edit later in "Options".
2.3: Configuring Star Tool Tip Actions
All answers appear in the question box with labels (e.g., ch1, ch2, ch3, or r1, r2, r3, or c1, c2, c3). Labels with the "ch" prefix indicate choices (i.e., star values). Labels with the "r" prefix indicate rows. Labels with the "c" prefix indicate columns / buttons. You may edit the response options by selecting "Star Tooltip Actions", "Row Actions" and / or "Column Actions". Click "Answer Piping" to show rows based on the answers to a previous question. See Answer Piping to learn more.
You can preview the element at any time by clicking the "Preview" button located at the top right corner of the element. To find out more about previewing an element, see Previewing a Question.
3: Style Settings
To edit the display settings for a Star Rating element, click the "..." button at the top right of the element in the staging area and select "Update Styling".
In the "Question Display Options" window, use the options on the left to specify how the question displays. When you mouse-over an option, information about the feature displays on the right.
Click "Save and Preview" to preview the settings. Once you are satisfied with the style options settings, click "Save and Close".
