The Slider element is a special type of rating element that allows survey participants to rate items using one or more dynamic sliders. You can add a Slider element to any survey using the Survey Editor.
Tip: See Customizing the Slider Element to learn how to customize the Slider element using survey XML.
1: About the Slider Element
The Slider element utilizes a type of number form and so must contain a value range for its slider points. It may contain multiple sliders (i.e., rows). This element does not utilize Flash.
Note: The Slider element is mobile compatible, though usability will degrade if multiple sliders are added.
2: Adding a Slider Element
Note: You can set the "Show" filter to display only elements that are compatible or optimized for the devices allowed for your project. See Project Settings Summary to learn how to how to verify your project settings.
To add a Slider element, first click the "+ Element" button to add a new survey element. Then click "Rate, Rank, and Sort" under Question Types and select the "Slider" element. Then click "Add".
Enter the question and instruction text in the areas provided. Then use the “Options” menu to the right of the staging area to customize the slider.
2.1: Including Multiple Sliders
If you would like to include multiple sliders, add additional rows to the element by clicking the "Add Sliders" button.
Tip: If you want to show only one slider with the question text, do not add any answer options.
Then enter the text for the sliders. Each entry will be a new row and will have its own slider. Do not number the answer options unless you want numbering to appear for participants. The system will automatically provide labels / numbers for the answer options, which you can edit later using the "Options" menu.
All answers will appear in the question box with labels (r1, r2, r3, etc.), indicating individual rows / sliders. You may edit each slider using the "Slider Actions" drop-down.
For example, you can click "Answer Piping" to show sliders based on participants' answers to previous survey questions. See Answer Piping to learn more about answer piping.
2.2: Defining the Range
Next, you must define the range for the slider scale. In the "Options" menu to the right of the staging area, enter the desired range for the slider scale in the "Value Range" field.
In the following example, the range is set from "1" to "5", meaning the lowest value is 1 and the highest is 5.
3: Configuring Display Settings
To configure the display settings for your Slider element, click the "..." button in the staging area and select "Update Styling" from the drop-down.
In the "Question Display Options" window, configure the settings for the element using the options on the left. Additional information about each feature will appear when you mouse-over the text. Click "Save and Preview" to preview the settings. Once you are satisfied with your settings, click "Save and Close".
